Our Psalm today stresses this.<\/p>\n<p>Psalm 85 is very relevant to the season of Advent. It being jam packed full of promise in a time of waiting and great uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stars.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1638 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stars-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stars-300x204.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stars-768x523.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stars.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The psalmist first calls us to remember what God has done for us and resonates with Mark\u2019s telling of the story of John the Baptists proclamation of the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.<\/p>\n<p>In the second part the psalmist asks God to speak peace to his people, those who are faithful in their turning to God. The response to this request is a proclamation of salvation to those who \u201cfear\u201d the Lord. Those who \u201cfear\u201d God are not full of dread of God but are those who are faithful and believe the promises of God.<\/p>\n<p>The psalm is filled with rich images the principle being a path. This is the path of God linking us to the path which is proclaimed by both Isaiah and Mark.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pathway.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1637 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pathway-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pathway-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pathway-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pathway-272x182.jpg 272w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pathway.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cway of the Lord\u201d is being made ready the path is being made straight. The psalmist writes beautiful words which invite us to walk that path and to experience the realities which accompany God on the way. We find that love, faithfulness, righteousness, and peace meet, kiss, spring up from below and look down from above.<\/p>\n<p>On this path we experience increased faithfulness and righteousness as God\u2019s people.<\/p>\n<p>As the psalm ends we see the footprints of God\u2019s path. God is walking on this path with righteousness leading the way. It is loud call which invites us to continue on our journey of Advent.<\/p>\n<h3>From our Advent Workshops<\/h3>\n<h3>Thoughts on &#8211; PSALM 85, 1 \u2013 2 and 8 \u2013 13 &#8211; Diana Holt<\/h3>\n<p>Unfailing Love and Truth have met together;\u00a0 Righteousness and Peace have kissed!<\/p>\n<p>What wonderful words, from Psalm 85!\u00a0 God\u2019s love and the truth of his Word are inseparable;\u00a0 a state of righteousness and the experience of his Peace are intertwined.\u00a0 From reverence to restoration.<\/p>\n<p>The Psalmist has cried out for God\u2019s intervention in the sinful world he sees around him.\u00a0 Surely all of us have done this \u2013 we weep to see a world so different from the one God created.\u00a0 And then, he senses God\u2019s gracious response, and his words change from despair to glorious hope.<\/p>\n<p>God speaks peace, he says, and implores the people not to return to their foolish ways.\u00a0 The more we seek God and obey him, the more we shall see everything else taken care of by God \u2013 we will see His blessings pour down upon the earth, his righteousness smile down on us, and we will know his peace in our hearts.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the world is broken.\u00a0 Yes, there is suffering and wickedness.\u00a0 Yes, we feel desperate and helpless, and we cry out \u2013 \u2018Where are you, God?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But then, do we listen for an answer?\u00a0 Perhaps if we did, we, like the Psalmist, would hear that still small voice saying \u2018I have given you my Son to show you the way.\u00a0 You cannot change the world, my child \u2013 leave that to me.\u00a0 But follow the way of Jesus \u2013 live righteously, and I will give you peace.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And the answer to \u2018Where are you, God?\u2019\u00a0 The answer is \u2018I am before you, behind you, at your side, and within you.\u00a0 I will never leave you \u2013 my saving presence will remain in your land\u2019.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Righteousness and peace have kissed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"passage-display\"><span class=\"passage-display-bcv\">Bible Passage &#8211; Psalm 85:1-2<\/span> <span class=\"passage-display-version\">New International Version &#8211; UK<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-1\">You, <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, showed favour to your land; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-1\">you restored the fortunes of Jacob. Y<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-15274\" class=\"text Ps-85-2\">ou forgave the iniquity of your people\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"text Ps-85-2\">and covered all their sins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"passage-display\"><span class=\"passage-display-bcv\">8-13<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NIVUK-15280\" class=\"text Ps-85-8\">I will listen to what God the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> says; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-8\">he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants\u00a0\u2013 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-8\">but let them not turn to folly.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIVUK-15281\" class=\"text Ps-85-9\">Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-9\">that his glory may dwell in our land.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NIVUK-15282\" class=\"text Ps-85-10\">Love and faithfulness meet together; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-10\">righteousness and peace kiss each other. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-15283\" class=\"text Ps-85-11\">Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,<\/span> <span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-11\">and righteousness looks down from heaven. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-11\">T<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-15284\" class=\"text Ps-85-12\">he <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> will indeed give what is good, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-12\">and our land will yield its harvest. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-15285\" class=\"text Ps-85-13\">Righteousness goes before him <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-13\">and prepares the way for his steps.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Prayers and Reflection<\/h2>\n<h3>Helpful Hymn<\/h3>\n<h4>Hymn: \u2013 \u201cI want to walk with Jesus Christ\u201d<\/h4>\n<h4>Contemplation saying.<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201c<span id=\"en-NIVUK-15282\" class=\"text Ps-85-10\">Love and faithfulness meet together; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-85-10\">righteousness and peace kiss each other.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Let us pray together.<\/h3>\n<h3>Contemplative Prayer.<\/h3>\n<p>Think of the saying in order to understand context and meaning,<\/p>\n<p>Feel the meaning of the saying with and in your heart,<\/p>\n<p>Pray, using the saying, for yourself or others. Lord, no matter how we feel help us to skip and dance in that assurance of your steadfast and everpresent love.
