It is a love song of its time but the reason for my choice will hopefully become apparant as you read today&#8217;s reflection&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When I feel you put your arms around me<br \/>\nBaby, baby, can&#8217;t you hear my heartbeat?<br \/>\nThen I&#8217;m glad, I&#8217;m mighty glad I found you<br \/>\nBaby, baby, can&#8217;t you hear my heartbeat?<\/p>\n<p>In our passage today we hear Isaiah shout a cry of disbelief as God calls him to comfort his people despite the difficulties that they are in. The wilderness is a hostile place where conditions are harsh, and life is hard.<\/p>\n<p>We mistakenly think that we need to go into the wilderness to find God. The truth is that we are so often already in the wilderness ourselves in terms of our spirituality or where our hearts priorities lie. So it is into our wilderness that the Lord comes to comfort us. We do not need to search for God he has come to us as a shepherd to gently hold us close to his heart.<\/p>\n<p>What a wonderful image this paints &#8211; that I am held that closely by God that I should feel and hear the very beat of his heart.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/comingsoon.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1992 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/comingsoon-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/comingsoon-300x172.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/comingsoon-768x441.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/comingsoon.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Advent is a time when we express our longing for the day that Jesus will come to give us his comfort.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t want to wait for the valleys to be <span id=\"en-NIVUK-18425\" class=\"text Isa-40-4\">raised up, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-4\">the mountains and hills made low; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-4\">the rough ground made level, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-4\">the rugged places made into a plain. That sounds like it is going to take a very very long time!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will read tomorrow of the man named John who is the fulfilment of this prophecy of Isaiah.<\/p>\n<p>The waiting is nearly over our comforter is near. Hallelujah!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"passage-display\"><span class=\"passage-display-bcv\">Isaiah 40:1-11<\/span> <span class=\"passage-display-version\">New International Version &#8211; UK<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18422\" class=\"text Isa-40-1\">Comfort for God\u2019s people<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"chapter-2\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-1\">Comfort, comfort my people, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-1\">says your God. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18423\" class=\"text Isa-40-2\">Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-2\">and proclaim to her <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-2\">that her hard service has been completed,<\/span> <span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-2\">that her sin has been paid for, t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-2\">hat she has received from the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u2019s hand <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-2\">double for all her sins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18424\" class=\"text Isa-40-3\">A voice of one calling: <\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-3\">\u2018In the wilderness prepare <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-3\">the way for the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord;<\/span> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-3\">make straight in the desert <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-3\">a highway for our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/johnthebaptist.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1995 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/johnthebaptist-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/johnthebaptist-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/johnthebaptist.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a>God. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18425\" class=\"text Isa-40-4\">Every valley shall be raised up, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-4\">every mountain and hill made low; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-4\">the rough ground shall become level, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-4\">the rugged places a plain.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIVUK-18426\" class=\"text Isa-40-5\">And the glory of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> will be revealed, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-5\">and all people will see it together. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"right\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-5\">For the mouth of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> has spoken.\u2019<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18427\" class=\"text Isa-40-6\">A voice says, \u2018Cry out.\u2019 <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-6\">And I said, \u2018What shall I cry?\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-6\">\u2018All people are like grass,<\/span> <span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-6\">and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. T<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18428\" class=\"text Isa-40-7\">he grass withers and the flowers fall,<\/span> <span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-7\">because the breath of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> blows on them. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-7\">Surely the people are grass. T<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18429\" class=\"text Isa-40-8\">he grass withers and the flowers fall, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-8\">but the word of our God endures for ever.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18430\" class=\"text Isa-40-9\">You who bring good news to Zion, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-9\">go up on a high mountain. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-9\">You who bring good news to Jerusalem, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-9\">lift up your voice with a shout,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"text Isa-40-9\">lift it up, do not be afraid; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-9\">say to the towns of Judah, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-9\">\u2018Here is your God!\u2019 <\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18431\" class=\"text Isa-40-10\">See, the Sovereign <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> comes with power,<\/span> <span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-10\">and he rules with a mighty arm. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-10\">See, his reward is with him, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-10\">and his recompense accompanies him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NIVUK-18432\" class=\"text Isa-40-11\">He tends his flock like a shepherd: <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-11\">he gathers the lambs in his arms <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-11\">and carries them close to his heart; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-11\">he gently leads those that have young.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Prayers and Reflection<\/h2>\n<h3>Helpful Hymn:<\/h3>\n<p>Hymn: Singing the Faith 286 &#8211; What kind of love is this<\/p>\n<h3>Contemplation saying.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201c<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-11\">he gathers the lambs in his arms <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Isa-40-11\">and carries them close to his heart<\/span>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>Let us pray together.<\/h3>\n<h3>Contemplative Prayer.<\/h3>\n<p>Think of the saying in order to understand context and meaning,<\/p>\n<p>Feel the meaning of the saying with and in your heart,<\/p>\n<p>Pray, using the saying, for yourself or others.
