35<\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"en-GNT-29045\" class=\"text Luke-24-13\">The Walk to Emmaus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-24-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13&nbsp;<\/sup>On that same day two of Jesus&#8217; followers were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29046\" class=\"text Luke-24-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14&nbsp;<\/sup>and they were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29047\" class=\"text Luke-24-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15&nbsp;<\/sup>As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them; <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29048\" class=\"text Luke-24-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16&nbsp;<\/sup>they saw him, but somehow did not recognize him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29049\" class=\"text Luke-24-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17&nbsp;<\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cWhat are you talking about to each other, as you walk along?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-24-17\">They stood still, with sad faces. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29050\" class=\"text Luke-24-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18&nbsp;<\/sup>One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, \u201cAre you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn&#8217;t know the things that have been happening there these last few days?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-GNT-29051\" class=\"text Luke-24-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWhat things?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-24-19\">\u201cThe things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth,\u201d they answered. \u201cThis man was a prophet and was considered by God and by all the people to be powerful in everything he said and did. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29052\" class=\"text Luke-24-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20&nbsp;<\/sup>Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and he was crucified. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29053\" class=\"text Luke-24-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21&nbsp;<\/sup>And we had hoped that he would be the one who was going to set Israel free! Besides all that, this is now the third day since it happened. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29054\" class=\"text Luke-24-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22&nbsp;<\/sup>Some of the women of our group surprised us; they went at dawn to the tomb, <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29055\" class=\"text Luke-24-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23&nbsp;<\/sup>but could not find his body. They came back saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29056\" class=\"text Luke-24-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24&nbsp;<\/sup>Some of our group went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-GNT-29057\" class=\"text Luke-24-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25&nbsp;<\/sup>Then Jesus said to them, \u201cHow foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29058\" class=\"text Luke-24-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26&nbsp;<\/sup>Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then to enter his glory?\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29059\" class=\"text Luke-24-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-GNT-29060\" class=\"text Luke-24-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28&nbsp;<\/sup>As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther; <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29061\" class=\"text Luke-24-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29&nbsp;<\/sup>but they held him back, saying, \u201cStay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark.\u201d So he went in to stay with them. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29062\" class=\"text Luke-24-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30&nbsp;<\/sup>He sat down to eat with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave it to them. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29063\" class=\"text Luke-24-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31&nbsp;<\/sup>Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29064\" class=\"text Luke-24-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32&nbsp;<\/sup>They said to each other, \u201cWasn&#8217;t it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-GNT-29065\" class=\"text Luke-24-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33&nbsp;<\/sup>They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others <\/span> <span id=\"en-GNT-29066\" class=\"text Luke-24-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34&nbsp;<\/sup>and saying, \u201cThe Lord is risen indeed!
