{"id":5559,"date":"2019-12-03T14:24:29","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T14:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/?p=5559"},"modified":"2020-01-30T23:32:38","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T23:32:38","slug":"advent-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/?p=5559","title":{"rendered":"Advent 2019 &#8211; Session Four"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s session we are going to look at the coming of Jesus as told in the Gospel of John.<\/p>\n<p>John does not give an account of the events of the birth of Jesus rather he gives us his interpretation of these events.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Read John Chapter 1 verses 1 &#8211; 5<\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text John-1-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1\u00a0<\/span>In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Moon-and-stars-light.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5571 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Moon-and-stars-light-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Moon-and-stars-light-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Moon-and-stars-light-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Moon-and-stars-light-272x182.jpg 272w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Moon-and-stars-light.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>was God.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26047\" class=\"text John-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>He was with God in the beginning.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26048\" class=\"text John-1-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26049\" class=\"text John-1-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26050\" class=\"text John-1-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"versenum\"><strong>1. Does the fact that John does not include a birth narrative mean that this was not important to him?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Do we as Christians celebrate the events of Christmas or what those events mean? Are these two things inseparable?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In verse 1, John introduces us to the \u201cWord.\u201d In the following verses we explore who Jesus is. We do not trace his human ancestry but rather the fact that Jesus is God. That as the Word he has existed as part of the Trinity since the beginning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. What do you think of when you think of words? How important are words, not just in our culture, but in every culture?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Does John actually tell us specifically who he is speaking about with his use of the word \u201cWord\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Read John 1:14 and Hebrews 1: 1-2<\/h3>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-26059\" class=\"text John-1-14\">14. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text Heb-1-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1\u00a0<\/span>In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29966\" class=\"text Heb-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. What do these verses tell us about why John choose to use the word \u201cWord\u201d in reference to Jesus?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. What three truths does John tell us about the Word [Jesus] in verse 1?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Do you find these truths easy to understand and accept?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Colossians 1:15-20 helps us in our understanding.<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"text Col-1-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hands-light-hearts.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5573 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hands-light-hearts-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hands-light-hearts-300x158.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hands-light-hearts-768x405.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hands-light-hearts.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/a>15\u00a0<\/sup>The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29482\" class=\"text Col-1-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29483\" class=\"text Col-1-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29484\" class=\"text Col-1-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29485\" class=\"text Col-1-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29486\" class=\"text Col-1-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus himself spoke about his relationship and equality with God during his ministry on earth. The Jews responded by threatening violence against him and eventually plotting his death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Do you find Jesus&#8217; words on his place in the world helpful? If so how?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we think of creation, we often do think of the words that God spoke as creation happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. How does this statement about the Word, Jesus, being involved in creation help you understand and appreciate the creation account?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Does it change the way that you view creation in the world?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In verse four John introduces the theme which we find repeated throughout his Gospel that Jesus is life &#8211; \u201cin him was life and that life was the light of all mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. What kind of life do you think Jesus wants for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we read through John&#8217;s Gospel we gradually learn what this is.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 3:16<\/strong> \u2013 eternal life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 6:35<\/strong> \u2013 bread of life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 10:10<\/strong> \u2013 life abundantly<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 11:35<\/strong> \u2013 resurrection and life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 14:6<\/strong> \u2013 way, truth, and the life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 14:19<\/strong> \u2013 believe and have life and in<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 17:28<\/strong> \u2013 in him we live<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>12. In what way is Jesus the \u201clight of mankind\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Read John 1: 6 &#8211; 18<\/h3>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-26051\" class=\"text John-1-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>There was a man sent from God whose name was John.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26052\" class=\"text John-1-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>He came as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/candles2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5572 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/candles2-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/candles2-300x214.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/candles2-768x548.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/candles2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26053\" class=\"text John-1-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-26054\" class=\"text John-1-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26055\" class=\"text John-1-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26056\" class=\"text John-1-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26057\" class=\"text John-1-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God\u2014<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26058\" class=\"text John-1-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband\u2019s will, but born of God.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-26059\" class=\"text John-1-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-26060\" class=\"text John-1-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, \u201cThis is the one I spoke about when I said, \u2018He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.\u2019\u201d)<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26061\" class=\"text John-1-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26062\" class=\"text John-1-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26063\" class=\"text John-1-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We can perhaps identify how important light is in a dark room or place. We cannot see and are in danger of tripping or bumping into things and doing ourselves physical damage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. Can the same be said of Jesus in a dark world?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>14. How has Jesus brought light into your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>15. In what ways do you feel that the light of Jesus has \u201covercome\u201d darkness? In your life and in the world around you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>16. Do you find it easy to rely on Jesus&#8217; promise that we too will overcome the darkness in our world?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>17. As we read of John&#8217;s declaration about Jesus, does it encourage you to speak out more about the nature of God and the importance of beginning and continually developing a relationship with him?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>18.
