{"id":5151,"date":"2019-10-10T18:23:48","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T18:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/?p=5151"},"modified":"2019-10-13T21:37:53","modified_gmt":"2019-10-13T21:37:53","slug":"colossians-housegroup-material-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/?p=5151","title":{"rendered":"Colossians Housegroup Material &#8211; Week 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Colossians 2 verses 16 &#8211; 23<\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29511\" class=\"text Col-2-16\">Freedom From Human Rules<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><span class=\"text Col-2-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16&nbsp;<\/sup>Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29512\" class=\"text Col-2-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17&nbsp;<\/sup>These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29513\" class=\"text Col-2-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18&nbsp;<\/sup>Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29514\" class=\"text Col-2-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19&nbsp;<\/sup>They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29515\" class=\"text Col-2-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20&nbsp;<\/sup>Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29516\" class=\"text Col-2-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cDo not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!\u201d?<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29517\" class=\"text Col-2-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22&nbsp;<\/sup>These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29518\" class=\"text Col-2-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23&nbsp;<\/sup>Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In these verses Paul talks about some specific false teachings that the Colossians were facing. Our own experience is not the same but these verses still have relevance today.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Have you ever been made to feel spiritually inferior by a fellow Christian?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We do not have the same &#8220;rules and regulations&#8221; imposed on us as would have been the case in the past&nbsp; but there are elements of these rules that still persist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>2. How would you respond to a challenge that you do not keep the Sabbath properly. Perhaps shopping or working could be an example?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul particularly calls out those who show false humility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>3. What do you think Paul means by the phrase don&#8217;t let someone disqualify you &#8220;from the prize&#8221;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>4. How ought we respond to those who have super spiritual experiences and consider those who have not had the same experience as not proper Christians?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a great emphasis on the introduction of man made rules which have to be followed if we are to be true believers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>5. What are the problems with a religion based merely on rules? Why do you think some people find this attractive?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>6. How ought we respond to those who dismisses us because we do not follow the rules they do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The key in this passage is that in Jesus we have all we need and he has done everything which needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>7. How would you explain to someone the difference between religion and a true relationship with God?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Colossians 3 v 1 &#8211; 11<\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29519\" class=\"text Col-3-1\">Living as Those Made Alive in Christ<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text Col-3-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">3&nbsp;<\/span>Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29520\" class=\"text Col-3-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2&nbsp;<\/sup>Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29521\" class=\"text Col-3-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3&nbsp;<\/sup>For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29522\" class=\"text Col-3-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4&nbsp;<\/sup>When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29523\" class=\"text Col-3-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5&nbsp;<\/sup>Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29524\" class=\"text Col-3-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6&nbsp;<\/sup>Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29525\" class=\"text Col-3-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7&nbsp;<\/sup>You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29526\" class=\"text Col-3-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8&nbsp;<\/sup>But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29527\" class=\"text Col-3-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9&nbsp;<\/sup>Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29528\" class=\"text Col-3-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10&nbsp;<\/sup>and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11&nbsp;<\/sup>Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">&#8220;Set your minds on things above not on earthly things.&#8221;<br><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">8. What sort of things are earthly things and is it possible to entirely set our minds on things above?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">We are called to bury our old ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">9. Why do you think Paul uses such strong language &#8220;put to death&#8221; &#8220;rid yourselves&#8221;?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">10. Are there any surprises in the lists of things we must set aside and why do you think lying is singled out?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">Christ is all, and is in all<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">11. What are the barriers today which typically divide people? What practical difference might this passage make to your life today <em>if any. What would it mean to more consciously set your heart on things above and more deliberatley rid yourself of some things?<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29529\" class=\"text Col-3-11\">Colossians 3 v 12 &#8211; 17<br><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29530\" class=\"text Col-3-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12&nbsp;<\/sup>Therefore, as God\u2019s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29531\" class=\"text Col-3-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13&nbsp;<\/sup>Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29532\" class=\"text Col-3-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14&nbsp;<\/sup>And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-29533\" class=\"text Col-3-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15&nbsp;<\/sup>Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29534\" class=\"text Col-3-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16&nbsp;<\/sup>Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-29535\" class=\"text Col-3-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17&nbsp;<\/sup>And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29535\" class=\"text Col-3-17\">14. In the phrase &#8220;God&#8217;s chosen people, holy and dearly loved&#8221; what means the most to you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-29535\" class=\"text Col-3-17\">If we read Deuteronomy 7 verses 6 &#8211; 11 does this help in understanding this passage?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29535\" class=\"text Col-3-17\">15. In the list of &#8220;virtues&#8221; Paul gives us which comes most naturally to you? Which is the hardest?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-29535\" class=\"text Col-3-17\">16. Why is it important that we forgive each other?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span id=\"en-NIV-29535\" class=\"text Col-3-17\"><strong>17.
