{"id":354,"date":"2020-02-19T19:35:48","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T19:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/?p=354"},"modified":"2023-02-07T22:35:22","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T22:35:22","slug":"a-journey-through-lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/?p=354","title":{"rendered":"A Journey Through Lent &#8211; Day One"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Ashes to Ashes.<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Chris\/Downloads\/A-%20HRMC2\/HRMC\/Graphics\/lent01ashcross.jpg\" alt=\"Ash Cross\" \/>Ash Wednesday reminds us of the fragility of human life.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lent01ashcross.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-355 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/lent01ashcross.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>God tells Adam: &#8220;For dust you are and to dust you will return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alongside this fragility we are also subject to temptation and sometimes find ourselves unable to resist it.<\/p>\n<p>Today we clear the ground of the things that will hold us back as we start our Lenten journey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ash02.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-356 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ash02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>We open our hearts and minds to pray for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>For the things we have done knowing that they were contrary to God&#8217;s will for us.<\/p>\n<p>For the opportunities we have chosen to let pass by, that God had placed before us.<\/p>\n<p>As we confess the times we have given in to temptation, we remember that Jesus was tempted, just as we are, but was without sin.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Bible Passage: &#8211; Genesis Chapter 3 Verses 14 &#8211; 19 (NIV)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>We read of the result of that first temptation in the garden of Eden.<\/p>\n<p><em> So the Lord God said to the serpent,<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>&#8220;Because you have done this,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Cursed are you above all livestock<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and all wild animals!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You will crawl on your belly<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and you will eat dust<\/em><br \/>\n<em>all the days of your life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>And I will put enmity<\/em><br \/>\n<em>between you and the woman,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and between your offspring and hers;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>he will crush your head,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and you will strike his heel.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To the woman he said,<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>&#8220;I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>with painful labor you will give birth to children.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Your desire will be for your husband,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and he will rule over you.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To Adam he said,<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>&#8220;Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>tree about which I commanded you, &#8216;You must not eat from it,&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>&#8220;Cursed is the ground because of you;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>through painful toil you will eat food from it<\/em><br \/>\n<em>all the days of your life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>It will produce thorns and thistles for you,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and you will eat the plants of the field.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>By the sweat of your brow<\/em><br \/>\n<em>you will eat your food<\/em><br \/>\n<em>until you return to the ground,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>since from it you were taken;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>for dust you are<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and to dust you will return.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hymn: Singing the Faith 471 &#8211; &#8220;Lord I come to you&#8221;<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Contemplation saying.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><i>&#8220;For dust you are and to dust you will return&#8221;.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Let us pray together.<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Contemplative Prayer.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Think of the saying in order to understand context and meaning,<\/p>\n<p>Feel the meaning of the saying with and in your heart,<\/p>\n<p>Pray, using the saying, for yourself or others. With only a name and without explaining the reasons or pre-defining any answers.<\/p>\n<p>Listen for God&#8217;s voice in the quiet of your prayers.<\/p>\n<p>Pray using your own prayers or one of those which have been prepared below.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Twitter Prayer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Merciful God, I thank you that you are quick to forgive me.<br \/>\nThat I am able to hear and know that my sins are forgiven. Amen.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Facebook Prayer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Lord forgive me for the times I have fallen short of the standards I know I should strive for. I ask your help as I try to follow your way.<\/p>\n<p>Merciful God, I thank you that you are quick to forgive me and that I am able to hear and know that my sins are forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>May this season of Lent open my eyes to your presence in my life. Amen.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Full Prayer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i>As we start our journey through this time of lent<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/CrossLabyrinth3small.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-357 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org\/wptest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/CrossLabyrinth3small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nwe come before you, with all of our faults and failings.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Loving God, we know that you know everything about us<\/em><br \/>\n<em>but we need to acknowledge our shortcomings, to ourselves,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>so we bring to you our prayers of confession and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>humbly ask for your forgiveness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>Loving Father, I know that there are things in my life<br \/>\nwhich make you frown and sigh.<br \/>\nThese things burden my life with regret and pain, so<br \/>\nI bring them before you and lay them down.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Spend a short time in reflection on the things we could do better.<br \/>\nNot in a negative way but offering these things as an act of apology<br \/>\nand as the first step in a promise to try to do better.<\/p>\n<p><em>I thank you that you are a God of holiness who loves justice.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I thank you for your Holy Scriptures and for the life of your Son, Jesus,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>which show me the way that I should live my life.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Loving you with all of my heart<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Loving my neighbour as myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lord forgive me for the times I have fallen short<\/em><br \/>\n<em>of the standards I have known I should strive for.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Lord I ask your help as I try to follow your way.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Merciful God, I thank you that you are quick to forgive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That I am able to hear and know that my sins are forgiven.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That I can indeed lay my burdens of sinfulness before you and continue to walk in your way.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>May this season of Lent open my eyes to your presence in my life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In Jesus name.
