1. A prophetic Psalm<\/h3>\n

In reading Jonah’s prayer we see his change of mind as God “rescues” him in the belly of the fish. It is helpful to read this Psalm in the context of the story. Make a note of the things Jonah is giving praise to God for in this prayer.<\/p>\n

When you are in distress is your first inclination to turn to God in prayer. Make a note of why you do or do not do this. If your situation is of your own making does this change your answer?<\/p>\n

2. Saved by God’s Grace<\/h3>\n

In his prayer Jonah thanks God for saving him. As Christians we too are saved by the Grace of God through Jesus.<\/p>\n

Spend a litttle time reflecting on whether the way you use your time and talents demonstrates your thankfulness for this great gift.<\/p>\n

Write down your own prayer of praise to God for his saving Grace.<\/p>\n

3. Can we save ourselves?<\/h3>\n

As we read the story of Jonah it is pretty obvious that he is uable to save himself or to make up for his disobedience.<\/p>\n

It is difficult to acknowledge our own shortcomings but it may be helpful to try to jot down some of the things which changed when Jesus came into your life.<\/p>\n

It is also difficult to concede that we have to rely completely on God for our Salvation. Are you ever tempted to consider\u00a0 that what you do contributes to your Salvation?<\/p>\n

Read Ephesians 2 verses 1 – 10.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you could write a short prayer asking that you never lose sight of the unique nature of Salvation.<\/p>\n

4. In God’s hands<\/h3>\n

The story so far shows that Jonah is in the hands of God. He is rescued and then returned to dry land so that he can turn the words of his prayer into action.<\/p>\n

When you feel the hand of God on your life do you look for the direction he is leading you and set your feet firmly upon the path knowing that he is there to support and protect you?<\/p>\n

Make a note of the ways God has supported you in your life as a disciple and give thanks for them.<\/p>\n
