We thank you that you came as a human baby in order that we can return to you. Thank you that through your teachings you show us the way that we should live our lives. That through your death and resurrection we can know that we are part of your family. That we are loved cherished and given the promise of heaven. Amen.

Reflection

There is more than enough for several sermons in these few verses but I promised to be brief so…

Although we celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas day it is good for us to be reminded, as we continue our Advent journey, who Jesus is.

We can be tempted to just think of the coming of Jesus the baby at this time of year but that would be a mistake. Jesus is God the source of all that has, does and will exist and the one to which all things should be focused.

Through him we learn how to be human. How to be what God wants us to be. He teaches us what it means and how to be the church. Not the buildings or the fellowship within the church but how we encourage all to come into a relationship with God.

There is a worship song “Jesus be the centre” and in our reading today, in a few short verses, we see the ways in which Jesus is the center of reality. He has restored our relationship with God through his birth, death and resurrection.

A time for your own reflection

Read the passage again and spend a little time thinking of how the passage speaks to you. The wonder of scripture is that there is always something new to discover and each passage speaks to us in our own need and circumstances.

Only if you feel you want to – share your thoughts with someone. God inspires our thoughts and you never know, the person you share with may be waiting to hear what you have to say.

Song

Here is the next song –

“God to his children comes”

A bouncy “country” tune today.

Words: Chris Hancock
Inspiration: Colossians Chapter 1 Verses 15 – 20
Music: Generated on Suno.com
Vocals: A.I. voice.

http://www.hatfieldroadmethodist.org/wptest/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/God-to-his-children-comes.mp3

[Verse 1]

Before time, in the void,
The word was and is God,
He spoke and all things came to be,
Life to all things, he brought.

[Verse 2]

He leaves his divine form,
The Word dwells in our way,
That he can speak and teach us all,
To understand his ways.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Fathers’ only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

[Verse 3]

By him were all things made;
He holds them in his hand;
He is the head of all that is,
The sea, the sky, the land.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Father’s only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

[Verse 4]

By him were all things made;
He holds them in his hand;
He is the head of all that is,
The sea, the sky, the land.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Father’s only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

[Verse 5]

The angels sing their songs,
To tell of this childs’ birth,
The love of our eternal God,
Comes down to the earth.

[Chorus]

With joy we see, a babys’ face,
The eternal Father’s only Son:
How full of truth, how full of grace,
God to his children comes.

Prayer

Loving God, as we read these words from scripture we can see how much you love us.

The wonder of your divine form.
