‘Why Black History Month?’
About Bevan Powell MBE
Bevan is currently working for the Methodist Church in the role of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Adviser. However, he has spent most of his working career within the Metropolitan Police Service. Bevan is one of the founding members of the National Black Police Association in the United Lingdom and former Chair of the Metropolitan Black Police Association(MetBPA) in London. He has served in a number of post holder roles within the Association for well over a decade. In 1998 he was one of three MetBPA Executive members who gave crucial evidence to the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry and helped to shaped the language of ‘Institutional Racism’. In February 2019 Bevan gave written and oral evidence to a cross party government Home Affairs Select Committee investigating ‘Institutional Racism’, during his evidence Bevan stated strongly that Institutional Racism should have a legal footing and that it should fall under the Equalities Act 2010.
He has been a driving force in the BPA movement since its inception. He has been instrumental in developing many ground breaking community police race relations initiatives, including the MetBPA VOYAGE Programme (a comprehensive youth programme), of which he is particularly proud. His work with young people, led to the creation of the Association’s youth forum, the Young Black Positive Advocates (YBPA) and the development of a nationally recognised qualification in Leadership (BTEC) for young people in year 10. In 2007 Bevan was awarded an MBE for his contribution to policing.
In 2014 Bevan was elected as a Labour Councillor in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, challenging social injustice and providing advice to local people, this became all the more significant during the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.
